Available placements
Where can I check Summer Work 2027 placements?
Ask Alliance about current offers from its sponsors and employers. Availability changes during the season. Our Summer Work page explains when to apply, how to compare pay, hours and housing, and what to review before choosing a placement.
Where can Dominican applicants find Summer Camp placements?
Alliance guides eligible Camp Counselor applicants according to their skills and camps’ needs. Our Summer Camp page explains how to ask about placements, requirements and sought-after skills.
Where can I find Internship, Trainee and Hospitality placements?
Ask Alliance about professional training opportunities in hospitality and tourism, culinary arts and gastronomy, subject to your profile and availability. The Internship/Trainee page explains opportunities in hotels, resorts and restaurants and how they differ from temporary Summer Work jobs.
J-1 visas, sponsors and agencies
What is Summer Work and Travel USA?
It is a BridgeUSA cultural exchange program for eligible international university students to live temporarily in the United States, work during their academic vacation and experience US culture. Participants must be actively enrolled in a full-time course of study outside the United States, have completed at least one semester and meet the English requirements. Alliance helps Dominican students prepare for the process.
Is the J-1 visa a student visa?
The J-1 is an exchange visitor visa covering several BridgeUSA categories. Some serve students, such as Summer Work Travel and Intern; others serve professionals, teachers, trainees and other eligible exchange visitors. It is distinct from the F-1 academic student visa.
What is a BridgeUSA sponsor?
A BridgeUSA sponsor is an organization designated by the US Department of State to administer specific J-1 categories. It verifies eligibility, issues the DS-2019 and oversees the exchange program. Alliance works with US sponsors to help participants prepare for cultural exchange programs.
How can I find a J-1 sponsor in the United States?
Check the US Department of State's official list of designated sponsors for the relevant J-1 category. Dominican applicants can also work through an agency such as Alliance, which helps with preparation, placements and sponsor documents. Designation should be verified for the specific category.
Is Alliance a J-1 visa sponsor?
Alliance International Recruiting Agency is a recruitment and cultural exchange agency in the Dominican Republic that works with designated US sponsors. The official sponsor issues the DS-2019 and formally supervises the J-1 program. Alliance and the sponsor have different roles.
How can I choose a reliable Summer Work agency from the Dominican Republic?
Review experience, contracts, clear costs, verifiable reviews and the agency’s and sponsor’s responsibilities. Verify that the sponsor is designated for the relevant category. Our About Us page explains how to compare agencies, what to ask before paying and the support Alliance provides.
Traveling with friends
Can I apply for Summer Work with friends or as a group?
Yes. Tell Alliance from the start that you want to participate together. Each person has an individual application and must meet the requirements; traveling together does not guarantee the same employer, schedule or housing. See the Summer Work page for how group placements are assessed.
Requirements and English
What are the J-1 visa requirements for summer work in the United States?
For Summer Work Travel, you must be actively pursuing full-time studies at an accredited post-secondary institution outside the United States, have completed at least one semester and have sufficient English. You also need acceptance by a designated sponsor, SEVIS registration and a DS-2019 issued by that sponsor. The visa application involves the DS-160, passport and other documents and steps required by the embassy or consulate. Alliance helps you prepare your file. Program acceptance and a DS-2019 do not guarantee a visa; the consular authority makes that decision.
What level of English do I need for J-1 programs?
You must communicate effectively for the category and activities. Customer-facing Summer Work positions may require greater fluency; Camp Counselors must be able to supervise and interact with young people; Interns and Trainees must communicate in a professional setting. Alliance assesses your communication and the sponsor verifies the required level.
Destinations and jobs
How should I choose a state or destination for Summer Work and Travel?
There is no best destination for everyone or state with guaranteed placements. Compare pay, expected hours, housing, transportation, living costs and cultural exchange opportunities. Alliance presents destinations available for your profile and dates; the Summer Work page includes questions to help compare offers.
Are there J-1 placements in hotels and resorts?
Yes, depending on the position and category. Summer Work may include sponsor-approved seasonal jobs; Internship and Trainee require structured professional training and a DS-7002 plan. Review opportunities and conditions on the relevant program page: a hotel setting alone does not determine the correct category.
Costs and budgeting
What budget do I need for Summer Work and Travel?
In addition to the program, budget for the visa application, flights, initial housing and personal expenses during your first days in the United States. Ask Alliance for an itemized quote showing included services, separate costs and payment dates before you travel.
How much do J-1 programs cost?
Each program has its own cost. When you request information, Alliance will provide a detailed breakdown of the cost of the program you are interested in.
How much does Summer Work and Travel cost?
The price may change each season and depends on the selected program and placement. Include related travel expenses in your budget. Request Alliance's current Summer Work and Travel 2027 quote and confirm which services and costs it includes.
Housing and insurance
How can I find Summer Work Travel and seasonal US jobs with housing?
Ask Alliance about available seasonal offers at hotels, resorts, restaurants and other eligible employers that provide or arrange housing. Arranged housing is not necessarily free: it may have a cost, be subsidized or be deducted from wages. Compare pay, expected hours, weekly housing cost, deposit, included services, distance to work, transportation and local living costs. Sponsors must consider suitable housing and transportation when evaluating placements and actively help arrange alternatives if employers do not provide them or if a participant declines those options. Confirm the offer's terms before choosing.
What medical insurance do Summer Work Travel participants with a J-1 visa need?
You must maintain insurance meeting BridgeUSA's minimum J-1 requirements throughout your program. This also applies to J-2 dependents when the category permits accompanying family members. Specific terms depend on the sponsor and policy; review coverage dates, benefits, deductibles, exclusions, assistance and how to use the plan. Alliance explains the insurance documents supplied or required by your sponsor. Also check coverage for travel days outside the program period.
Internship and Trainee
Can a Dominican applicant do an internship in the United States?
Yes, if they meet the J-1 category's academic and professional requirements. Intern applicants must be enrolled at an eligible post-secondary institution outside the United States or have graduated within 12 months of the program start. Trainee applicants need a relevant foreign degree or professional certificate plus at least one year of related work experience outside the United States, or five years of related work experience outside the United States. Alliance can assess which category fits your profile.
What is the J-1 Internship program?
J-1 Intern provides structured, field-related training for students at eligible post-secondary institutions outside the United States and graduates within 12 months of the program start. It requires a designated sponsor and a DS-7002 training plan. It is a training program, not a substitute for ordinary employment.
What is the J-1 Trainee program?
J-1 Trainee offers structured practical training for qualified professionals. Applicants generally need a related foreign degree or professional certificate and at least one year of related work experience outside the United States, or five years of related work experience outside the United States. The sponsor evaluates eligibility and the DS-7002 training plan.
Summer Camp and Camp Counselor
What alternatives are there to Camp America?
Applicants do not have to use a single organization. Different designated sponsors and agencies offer Camp Counselor opportunities. Alliance offers Summer Camp USA through authorized organizations. Compare eligibility, activities, costs and available placements before choosing.
What is Summer Camp Counselor, and can Dominican candidates apply?
It is a J-1 category for supervising and supporting activities with children and young people at U.S. camps. Eligible Dominican applicants may apply: they must be at least 18, have sufficient English and be post-secondary students, youth workers, teachers or people with specialized skills. See Summer Camp for placements and sought-after skills.
Choosing a program and applying
Which program suits me: Summer Work, Summer Camp, Internship or Trainee?
This depends on your education, experience and goals. Summer Work combines temporary employment and cultural exchange during university vacations. Summer Camp focuses on supervising young people and camp skills. Internship offers study-related training for eligible students or recent graduates; Trainee is for applicants with professional experience.
Alliance evaluates your profile to help identify a suitable category. Compare programs on our homepage and review each program’s requirements before applying.
What is the difference between Internship and Summer Work and Travel?
Summer Work and Travel combines temporary work and cultural exchange during university vacations. Internship focuses on study-related training through a sponsor-approved DS-7002 plan. Your profile and goals determine the choice, rather than destination or pay alone.
Where can I apply for U.S. opportunities as a Dominican student?
Start your application through Alliance en Línea or contact Alliance in the Dominican Republic for an evaluation. Summer Work is for eligible university students; Summer Camp and Internship have different profiles and goals. Alliance reviews your studies, experience and English to help identify a suitable program.
The opportunity must be part of the program and reviewed by the relevant sponsor. Summer Work participants from countries outside the Visa Waiver Program need an arranged job before entering the United States. Alliance supports the application and consular preparation; the sponsor confirms eligibility and the consular authority decides on the visa.
