THE PROGRAM

What is Summer Camp USA?

A cultural exchange opportunity to serve as a counselor at a US summer camp. For approximately nine weeks, you will join a team supporting children and young people through outdoor activities, games, sports and creative experiences.

If you enjoy working with young people, sharing your skills and exploring a new culture, this could be your next adventure. Your offer confirms the dates, camp and terms.

REQUIREMENTS

Is this program right for you?

Age 18 to 28

Participation range published by Alliance. Confirm your profile during the evaluation.

Intermediate or advanced English

English skills to supervise and interact with children and young people. Your proficiency is assessed in an interview.

Experience and skills

A post-secondary student, youth worker, teacher or person with specialized skills. Experience working with groups can strengthen your profile.

Enthusiasm for supporting others

Willingness to work with children and young people, collaborate with the team and contribute to a safe experience.

BridgeUSA sets a minimum age of 18 for Camp Counselor; the 18–28 range is Alliance’s published profile. The sponsor confirms each participant’s eligibility. See official requirements.

YOUR ROLE AT CAMP

What will you do as a camp counselor?

You will support campers and help organize enjoyable, safe activities. Depending on the camp’s needs and your experience, you may share skills in sports, swimming, arts, theater or music.

Camp Counselor focuses on supervising young people and leading activities. This J-1 category does not cover general kitchen, cleaning or administrative camp jobs.

PLAN AHEAD

Prepare your budget

  • At least US$1,500 in travel funds requested by Alliance
  • Review program, visa, SEVIS, insurance and flight costs in your quote
  • Budget for transportation, travel and personal expenses
  • Confirm in writing which services are included and which are charged separately

The approximate duration is nine weeks. Your offer specifies compensation, dates and services; request the current total cost before enrolling. Travel funds are a personal reserve, not the program price.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Prepare your profile and documents

Alongside the basic requirements, prepare references and documents supporting your experience. The sponsor reviews the conditions of your participation.

English interview

Alliance assesses your communication skills and suitability before you move forward.

Camp offer

After evaluation, available partner camps approved by the sponsor are considered. Your placement must be confirmed.

Two references

Request references from current or former employers or teachers. If applying based on a specialized skill, one should describe that skill.

Travel funds: US$1,500

Alliance requests at least US$1,500 in travel funds for needs during your stay. This is separate from the program cost.

Background check

Provide a background check from your home country covering the last six months. Confirm the accepted issue date with Alliance.

Sponsor documents

Complete the required program, J-1 visa and insurance documents with guidance from the team.
